It stands to reason they would be geared differently given the weight differences and horsepower differences and rpm curves of the separate vehicles.
772.618 will cost approx $6.000 - just a part. 717.4 (manual) ~$2800 - just a part. I shopped around (a lot !!), and it cost anywhere from $3.5-6K to rebuild a 772.6 transmission. Pull down the wire connector (fastened with a clip) to reveal the screw that holds the shield in place. There's a star pattern screw hidden away under that harness that I just pulled out of the way, unscrew it. Once the bottom screw is removed, simply push the thin metal shield out of the way revealing the connector.

CHECKING TRANS FLUID. My mechanic, who is very good, ordered me my own dipstick from MB to check the fluid with. He fixed it so that I do not need a key to check the fluid and I keep the e320 dipstick in my trunk. He flushed my transmission and used the recommended MB trans fluid and the car runs great.
